| Waiotahi Beach (and surrounds) ticks all the boxes for a perfect holiday! It is remote enough that it provides a sense of truly ‘getting away from it all’, while being just a few minutes from Opotiki township and Ohiwa Harbour. If you prefer a more active holiday there's an abundance of cafes/restaurants, leisure and adventure activities, sightseeing and day trip options. |

Waiotahi Beach is one of the safest beaches in the region. Patrolled by the local surf club during the summer, the gentle beach is great for swimming, body surfing and surfing when conditions are right. On a clear day you can see White Island from the campsite - you can visit by boat via Whakatane, or by helicopter direct from Waiotahi for some real excitement. whiteisland.co.nz, vulcanheli.co.nz, volcanicair.co.nz |
Kayaking and Whitewater kayaking are popular on the Motu and Waioeka rivers. Sea kayaking is also a fun way of getting your long line out to sea. Kayaks and lifejackets are available for loan from the camp office. Whitewater Rafting on the mighty Motu River is legendary, with guided options ranging from 1-5 days. Family groups find the Waioeka River more appealing for fun packed shorter trips. |

Surfcasting directly off Waiotahi beach yields snapper all year round. For game fisherman the waters off Waiotahi and around White Island are regarded as the best Tuna fishing grounds in New Zealand. Local guides and charter boats are the best way to find your own favourite spot. We are able to recommend local guides and charter boats according to your needs. Chatting with fellow campers is a great way to find out where the fish are biting. The back country rivers in the area also offer exceptional trout fishing. |
Cycle or walk the Motu Trails. These trails are distinctive in their own right. Your journey will cover as many uphill climbs as downhill glides. The track hugs the spectacular Pakihi Stream. You will traverse the rolling hills of the historic Motu region and provide breath-stopping views of the Pacific Ocean. https://motutrails.co.nz/ If you prefer more sedate activities there are numerous walking trails through the Waioeka gorge, and the Urewera and Raukumara mountain ranges which border Opotiki. For a bit of light fun take the kids to play at the swings and slide at the rivers edge in Opotiki or venture up the valley and off road to the DOC operated Boulders campsite to jump off the rocks or ride down the gentle rapids. Avid golfers can enjoy a lesiurely round of golf at the local Opotiki Golf Course. www.nzgolfcourses.co.nz/opotiki/i just a couple of minutes drive from Island View Holiday Park. |
Horse Riding along the beach and bush riding are popular in the Opotiki region, which also happens to be the rodeo capital of New Zealand. Both the Urewera’s and Raukumara’s hold large populations of red deer, wild boar and goats. Hunting in these areas is spectacular and local guides are the best way to discover this country. |
